Melville Street Torquay
Connie & John ran the Melville pub in Torquay. They were both ravaged. John in an Aberdonian seafaring fashion wearing a wild beard and Connie who kept a secret Soho history.
The pub had a juke box and a piano. Dougie, a bachelor French polisher, played the piano on a Sunday lunchtime – a ritual along with the roast potatoes and cheese nibbles on the bar.
Dougie would always drink the gin that Connie had cleaned her gold rings in.
