‘Smoke and Other Tales’

March 11, 2015

I need backers to get an initial 500 full colour, hardback, limited edition of Smoke and Other Tales designed, printed and bound. In return I can offer the new book and copies of my previous works. Please see below. ‘Smoke and Other Tales’, is a follow-up to my critically acclaimed short story collection ‘Lubin Tales.’

‘Smoke’, at triple the girth of Lubin Tales, draws heavily on my own life experiences, as well as exploring a rich social history that covers predominantly the East End of London and the South Coast.

The books and cards you can see here are part of a Kickstarter initiative to raise the necessary finance to publish Smoke and Other Tales in the next couple of month’s. More details will follow.

Writer Will Self has kindly written the foreword (excerpt below):

Gerry King may, superficially, seem to be part of a long tradition of English sepia-to-noir chroniclers…does he, perhaps, belong with Patrick Hamilton, Derek Raymond and Julian MacLaren-Ross? Yes and no, because King’s perspective is at once more elegiac and more imaginative than theirs…King’s vision has the oblique prankishness of the great Russian Absurdist, Daniil Kharms, and the subversive sneakiness of Saki; and his fiction fuses the unexpected with damp carpet underlay. For King, life presents as an endless series of moments, moments of poignancy, pathos and bathos, yet never, ever, of whimsy…Gerry King’s rolled-up fiery treat of a book…light upon with your eyes again and again and again, because a smoke such as this one can always be relit.
